Tips on Vegetable Gardening

Vegetable Gardening for Beginners

Vegetable gardening can be a wonderful and satisfying hobby. You are able to work outdoors, and enjoy the fruits of your labor at the end of the season.

Here are some common questions and answers that beginner gardeners have:

I’m new to vegetable gardening. What vegetables should I start out with?

Tomatoes are pretty easy to grow. Here’s a video with tips on how to grow tomatoes.  Peppers work well if you have long warm summers.  Green beans are relatively easy to grow, and they have the benefit of enriching the surrounding soil.

For cooler climates, you might try lettuce and radishes, but they may get bitter if the summer is hot.

You might also add some herbs, such as basil, rosemary, oregano and mint.  Take a look at our heirloom seeds for sale.

What should I do to prepare my vegetable garden for planting?

First clean out your beds.  Make sure there are no weeds.  Till the soil about 6 inches.  This will loosen up the soil for the fertilizer.  Once you are done with that, add compost or manure and mix it in to create a nice rich soil.   Once there is no more frost, you can plant your garden.  ( Usually around Mother’s Day).

What are the benefits of a raised garden bed?

Raised garden beds are nice  in that soil compaction is reduced, so roots get more oxygen.   It’s also easier for excess moisture to drain away.  From a work perspective, it’s much easier to access the plants, to weed, and it’s less demanding on the back.

If you live in a townhouse or have limited space for a garden, you might also try container gardening.

What’s a natural way to keep bugs away from my vegetable garden?

Try insecticidal soap.  Just make sure you rinse your vegetables thoroughly before eating them.

You can also use a hot pepper wax that is lightly spray on the leaves. The oils from the spicy contents of this wax wards off the harmful insects and other pests as well.

You might also plant marigolds along the borders of your garder, as they give off a scent that repels bugs.

I’ve been thinking about making my own compost for my garden.  How would I go about doing that?

I personally like using a compost tumbler, as it’s much easier and faster to create your own compost.   Here is a video how to use a compost tumbler.

Even though you are a beginner, you can grow a vegetable garden!
